Dictator Dyas stifles Cannan again

Ron Cannan attempted to scale back funding for Kelowna’s official outdoor homeless camp until hearing from cops. Cannan says there are often more bylaw and security guards at the site than there are homeless. With heat watching their every move, the homeless go somewhere else to be free of knob surveilance, meaning the homeless problem grows elsewhere in the city.
Cannan proposed a motion for council to hear from RCMP Supt. Chris Goebel to see if police believed the city’s investments in the outdoor sheltering site were working.
The motion was squelched by Dyas. “That’s the end of that,” Dyas squeeled. Cannan complained Dyas had “cut me off”.

The ever growing 2026 Kelowna budget provides for two more RCMP, two more bylaw officers, and four more firefighters. Cannan was involved in Dyas’ 2022 mayoral campaign, but the two haven't seen eye to eye since. The politico veteran Cannan was asked if he would be running for mayor to replace the deeply unpopular and obtuse Dyas. He said he would have an announcement to make in 2026.
